Early evening in the city and the spring wind kicked up mini dust devils which swirled along the street, chasing the citizens heading to Ballantynes. The red carpet formed a path to refuge from the breeze and in the Contemporary Lounge, the inviting clink of glasses rang in welcome. Relaxing with small talk and richly laden platters, guests readied themselves to flirt with fashions fit for summer. A shiver of excitement wove through the darkened hush, the lights dimmed except on the runway as the show commenced. The legion of elegant models strode the stage to sway the garments before the audience, whose imaginations came alive with dreams of the coming season of stylish dressing.

Cholmondeley Official Opening The high noon reflected off Lyttelton Harbour throwing light and heat onto the Port Hills where, commanding the view, the newly completed Cholmondeley building stood in welcome. Having sustained irreparable earthquake damage, the original facility was sacrificed to progress and safety of design, to be replaced by this new edifice. Invited guests took to the cool shade with refreshing drinks to stave off the fury of the hot spring sun. Speeches intoned from the hearts of the speakers with sincere affection for this place served as the prelude for the official act of opening. A blessing and dedication topped the ceremony, making Cholmondely ready to serve the needs of future generations of children in this haven of security and love.

There was a buzz of excited anticipation in the air at The Tannery as night fell and an event not to be missed got underway. The Canterbury Fashion Beauty Week Summer Collections and Awards were gracing the victorian mall which had been table lined and decorated to be an arcade of cabaret and couture. The lights dimmed and as in a dream, lithe dancers milled around as limp puppets, brought to life by the ringmaster, in darkly unsettling steampunk robes. Then came the time for the models to make the long walk to fashion glory, each high-heeled step taking them along the tunnel of admiring gazes as palms met in applause. When the last garment withdrew from the field, the atmosphere did not subside, indeed it was the signal for the after-event party to begin and for the remaining segment of night to rock with the sounds of merriment.

I think of these two elements as being universally linked; in fact a brief literature search revealed’ huge numbers of articles and references relating to both, and their deep correlation. Accordingly, I believe the world looks kindly on those that communicate in an empathetic and articulate manner, and strong communication skills are often one of the foundations of success, both in my own industry and others. But the communication methods of my belief systems and the world we all live in yield some entirely different scenarios. Before we interpret business communication methods I’m going to enter (briefly) the scary territory of family communication. I love nothing more than healthy dynamic conversations with our two sons and their friends but first we have to get past some
actions that other parents might recognise. Eyes downcast, often completely and utterly obsessed with whatever game, text or Facebook message is lobbying for attention. Preoccupation with social media drives the sort of attention that excludes everything else! It can be, and often is, a massive block to communication. I’ve read that constant engagement with your phone has had an alarming impact on attention spans which I’m noticing more and more in both a domestic and professional context.
If I then move to real estate I find constant emailing versus a physical phone call has introduced an arm’s length barrier that can make rapport difficult and message or meaning can be clouded. Much of the rationale for that is convenience and timeliness, all great, but I consider the absence of any verbal conversation a loss. The feedback I get from clients is that one of the priorities is constant feedback across all mediums.
Recent research has identified the average person checks their phone at least 50 times a day and these types of behaviours can be seen in many professional settings.
So what’s my point? It’s hard to connect if you don’t communicate, look up from your phone and deal with the person actually in front of you.
A friend recently tried to purchase an item of clothing at a local store only to wait for a lengthy period for the shop assistant to stop taking her own ‘selfies’. Service certainly wasn’t high on the list there.

Keep cool this summer by avoiding a few key heat-generating activities and practising some simple ventilation methods. Installing window treatments – either curtains or shades – will help block out direct sunlight and with insulated shades you can significantly reduce heat transference through windows. Whenever outside temperatures are higher than the ones inside close all windows and exterior doors to keep the heat at bay. Consider cooking outdoors on the grill or using the microwave instead of the oven or stove on hot days. Keep temperatures under control by always using the stove’s spot ventilation above the range hood to transfer heat outside and avoid using the dishwasher during the heat of the day. The bathroom and laundry are other areas around the home where appliances create unwanted heat on warm days. When you shower or run a bath use the bathroom fan to suck out heat and
moisture. Washing machines also generate a lot of heat, so opt for cold washes on hotter days and take advantage of the fine weather to dry your washing outside instead of using the dryer. Electronic devices, such as entertainment systems and computers, produce heat too, as do burning candles and other appliances like curling irons and hair dryers, so make sure they are not kept on unnecessarily or at least have plenty of ventilation to circulate around them. If you are considering redesigning your garden and outdoor areas, discuss with your landscape architect the ways protective shade can be incorporated to help cool your home. When the opportunity arises to replace your roof or if you are building a new home, opt for a light-coloured material that will reflect, rather than absorb the heat, and insulate your home adequately to help keep the heat out in summer and retain it in the winter.

PERENNIAL NEW WAVE With talk of tropical El Nino weather patterns continuing to affect New Zealand’s climate this summer, local landscape architect, Craig Wilson, provides some great planting advice to create dynamic and sustainable gardens. Facing drier weather conditions in the eastern parts of New Zealand combined with increased water restrictions in Canterbury it’s a good time to consider how this impacts on our gardens, and particularly on plant selection. For some years now an emerging trend in garden design has seen more drought-tolerant plantings. Previously we may have considered this something only our Australian counterparts had to deal with, but as water and irrigation issues have become more prevalent across the Tasman, investigation into the use of drought-tolerant plants in New Zealand has increased. The first response to water supply and availability
restrictions is to choose plants that are matched to the local environmental conditions. Plants that are native to an area are more likely to thrive, whereas introduced botanical specimens may require additional irrigation and specific nutrient input levels that are both costly and unsustainable. Drought-tolerant plants are often characterised by a silver/ green foliage colour, such as New Zealand natives Brachyglottis, Pachystegia, and Olearia that are well suited to dry Canterbury conditions. Most of our native grasses are equally as proficient at surviving prolonged dry spells, once established. If you wanted something more
exotic, then there are plenty of other drought-tolerant plant options to explore. Plants suited to a Mediterranean climate will generally thrive in Canterbury. Try santolina, olive, sweet bay, rosemary and lavender to add good evergreen structure and some flowering interest. For textural interest, Australian native evergreens Lomandra and Dianella, recently available in New Zealand, have a wide range of hybrids, which are much like our own native grasses, but have a wider range of colours and have the propensity to hold a better, rigid, upright form over time. When planted en masse with closer spacing these will achieve a ground-cover effect, which may
also help with reduced on going maintenance and weed control. On a recent garden tour of Northern California, it was interesting to note the plant selection implemented at the McConnell Arboretum in Turtle Bay, which was reminiscent of the ‘New Perennial’ garden movement championed by famous garden designers like Piet Oudolf. Drought-tolerant flowering perennials like Russian sage, Verbena bonariensis and echinacea were used for pops of pink and purple amidst textural Californian grasses and succulents. This is a visually appealing and sustainable design that could be successfully applied to Canterbury gardens.

It's a lovely treat, especially if you are under stress. hydration is important for great looking skin, so make sure you drink two litres of water a day and moisturise day and night. eat a balanced diet and avoid salty foods and alcohol, which can make your body retain water and lead to puffiness. Getting a good night's sleep will keep a lid on stress levels so you relax and enjoy the big day and will also help minimise any breakouts and reduce redness.

In the weeks and months leading up Christmas, big events like Cup & Show Week beyond, Style caught up with the head of Estée Lauder to discover a few tricks of the trade to incorporate into your beauty regime this party season.

Trade General Manager of estée lauder Companies, Marie-ann Billens, has assimilated an arsenal of tried and tested beauty tips over the last 25 years, direct from the makeup experts who work on a daily basis with the respected cosmetics brands she loves and lives by. “If there’s one tip that I can give you, it’s to invest in a foundation brush," says Marie-ann. "It makes your foundation go on far smoother and more evenly, and you use less of it so you don’t go through the bottle anywhere near as fast.” MaC's senior makeup artist at Ballantynes agrees that if there is just one brush to buy it would have to be the foundation brush. “If you begin with a fresh, flawless base then everything looks great, but if your foundation doesn’t look good, nothing will work," says Bryan.
“If you don’t have a long-wear foundation then a concealer and a corrector are critical," Marie-ann insists. “I always carry a concealer, which I use for touch-ups during the day, and it's much more convenient than lugging around a bottle of foundation." another great tip for long lasting luscious lips is to use foundation or concealer over lips to create a blank canvas on which to apply lip pencil followed by lipstick. Blot with a tissue and then apply a second layer of lippie for ultimate staying power. spring is all about fresh, dewy skin, so give nature a little helping hand by utilising highlighters and illuminators. Use highlighters on cheek and brow bones, and mix illuminators with moisturisers and foundation to give a brighter complexion.

My day begins at 5am when I get up and take the dog for a walk and make my daughter's school lunch before heading to the gym by 6:30am and then to the base, where we start our day shift at 7:30am. Once a complete helicopter and gear check is done, we assist the pilots in preparing the other choppers for commercial work for the day. Each and every day can vary remarkably, from being out all day on missions to being relatively quiet back at the base and then suddenly called out towards the end of the shift. Depending on our workload, preparation is made for presentations, as the Air Rescue Trust have pre-arranged groups attending our base where the Trust explains their role and we explain ours and the service we provide within the Canterbury region. If training is required then that has to be arranged with the full complement of the crew to maintain currencies. The days at the base seem to go remarkably fast, with a lot of other general base duties to be done. We end our day shift at 5.30pm but are on call for night missions 24/7. It's a demanding job, technically, physically, mentally,

All crew members must have extensive experience as Intensive Care Paramedics before they can apply to become a rescue worker. Following that, they then have to pass a comprehensive physical fitness test, which includes a swimming component. If they pass this, then the interview process begins to see what attributes they could bring to the team and we see if their personality will suit the challenging work environment. It's not for everyone, but for those who have the passion to save lives, the right kind of temperament and a fierce commitment to the job, then it's an incredibly fulfilling way to spend your working days.

Star Media has recently become part of the Air Rescue Support Crew and encourages local businesses, individuals and families to do the same. To find out what goes on behind the scenes and how donations are used, Style caught up with Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue Trust CEO Christine Prince. Whenever the iconic red and yellow helicopter flies overhead two things are certain: one, something very serious has happened, and two, the best help is on its way. The Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue Trust (CWCART) has completed more than 8350 missions since 1989, however, this operation could not continue without the support of donations and grants, and people like you. Christine Prince joined CWCART this year as CEO, and is heavily involved in bringing in the necessary funding. “We need help to keep running this critical service, which is a free service; it is important we can

The latest sponsorship initiative enables individuals, families and businesses to join the Air Rescue Support Crew, which benefits the supporter and the service. The inaugural member is teenager Dylan Flatman, who called on the Westpac Rescue Helicopter when he was 12. On Canterbury Show Day, Dylan collided with a power pole while riding his dirt bike and was airlifted to Christchurch Hospital. “We met with his family recently and he has just started playing rugby again,” Christine says. Despite perception that the Air Rescue service is used predominantly by those involved in extreme outdoor persuits, it doesn’t stop there. Any accident
for which timing or access is crucial will call on air rescue, be it the result of a motor vehicle accident, farming misadventure, medical emergency, or fishing incident. As Christine rightly states, “Essentially, anyone could need the service.” “Last year, the crew completed 837 missions; on average two or three per 24-hour period... Spring fashion blossomed into life at Merivale Mall as garments of desire were paraded at sunset. The white marquee was alive with an electrified thrill as guests waited for the show to commence. To a burst of music, the first model appeared followed by a steady line of high strutters who, with feline grace, made the runway their own, holding an almost mesmerising sway over the audience. Hardly sedate, the crowd performed lively bidding during the auction and concluded the evening with enthusiastic applause. The post-show shopping provided a time to reflect on the good done by all present in raising money for the benefitting charity, KidsCan whose ongoing work provides footwear, food and healthcare to disadvantaged children.

IngredIents PaSSioNFruit CurD 11 passionfruit, pulped 2 eggs 2 egg yolks 150g/5 oz caster/superfine sugar 100g/3½ oz unsalted butter
45ml tequila 15ml Peril 20ml lemon juice 45ml fresh pineapple 30ml fresh strawberries
MeriNGue (makes about 36 mini meringues) ½ cup macadamia nuts 3 egg whites ¾ cup caster/superfine sugar ½ teaspoon white vinegar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 teaspoon cornflour/cornstarch
Shake all ingredients and strain into a chilled glass over crushed ice and garnish with a wedge of orange and an edible flower.

InstructIons 1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/400°F. 2. Place macadamia nuts on a baking tray in a hot oven and toast until slightly browned and fragrant. This won’t take long, so keep an eye on them. Remove the nuts and allow to cool before roughly crushing them. 3. Lower the temperature of the oven to 120°C/250°F. Line two baking trays with paper and draw circles on it, depending on what size you want the meringues. 4. Place the egg whites into a clean dry bowl and whisk with electric beaters until soft peaks form. gradually add the sugar to the egg whites, a small amount at a time. 5. Continue beating until all the sugar has been combined. Beat in the vinegar. Add in the cornflour and vanilla and beat until stiff peaks form and the mixture is glossy. 6. Spoon into a piping bag and pipe into the circles you’ve drawn
on the prepared trays. Bake in the oven for 20-30 minutes, until a slight colour appears. 7. Turn off the oven, leave the oven door ajar and leave meringues in there until completely cool. 8. To make candied macadamia nuts you will need bamboo skewers, a piece of polystyrene and one sheet of newspaper. Set up your polystyrene with the newspaper spread out underneath – you want to be able to stick the dipped nut/skewer into it and allow the candy to drip off. Skewer each nut, ready for dipping. 9. Add the sugar and water in a saucepan over a high heat. Wipe the sides of the saucepan with a wet brush, preventing the syrup from crystallising on the sides. Dip macadamias in mixture and leave to set. 10. To make the passionfruit curd, put the pulps of ten passionfruit into a processor and blitz until the seeds are loose. Strain the mixture and reserve the liquid and the pulp. 11. Beat the eggs, yolks and sugar together until thick and pale. 12. Melt the butter over a low heat and, once melted, gradually stir in the egg mixture then the passionfruit juice. Continue to cook on low heat, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens. 13. Off the heat, stir through the pulp and remaining passionfruit, place in a jar and place in the fridge. 14. To make the coconut cream, place the coconut milk can into the fridge overnight, this will allow it to separate. 15. Once cold, flip the can over and pour out the clear liquid. Scoop the solid white cream into a bowl. Add the icing sugar and whip until soft peaks form. 16. Add the vanilla seeds and stir through. Place the cream into the fridge to firm back up. 17. To plate up, put a dollop of coconut cream on each meringue, drizzle with passionfruit curd, top with macadamia nuts and garnish.

Formerly known as Pierce’s Bakery, Delwyn Denton-Lanauze injected her own unique flavour when she took over six months ago, turning the bakery into Mrs Dentons, a café-style delicatessen. With a background in farming and many years spent in the Chatham islands where Delwyn says creative cooking skills were a necessity, Delwyn has enjoyed working with food most of her life. She creates seasonal chutneys, pesto and relishes for customers to savour at home, and has produced a tasty new range for Christmas. A tangy cranberry ketchup makes for a delicious accompaniment to homemade burgers and barbecued meats, and a rich mixed-fruit chutney with dried mango, dates, cranberry and apricots, is an ideal addition to picnic hampers and antipasto platters. With the arrival of summer you can expect to see fresh green and berry smoothies on the menu as well as Delwyn’s scrumptious berry cheesecake jars and luscious
chocolate mousse. Famous for its homemade pies, Mrs Dentons continues to offer Pierce’s popular pie range alongside Lieber Pies made in Fairlie by Austrian chef, Franz Lieber. All six hearty varieties of Lieber pies are hand-filled, completely free of any nasty additives or preservatives, and, in Christchurch, can only be found at Mrs Dentons. On top of delicious pie fillings like salmon and bacon and pork belly with crackle, Delwyn often produces her own creative concoctions that include the unique kangaroo, cheese and blueberry pies. “i often bring back kangaroo from my regular visits to Australia, which i just love. A highly popular restaurant and bar to emerge from the rubble amidst post-quake desolation, Baretta shows no signs of slowing down five years on. The intimate interiors are moody and inviting. Proud teal and gold adorned peacocks lining the walls lend an air of regal pomp and circumstance to the main dining room, which is punctuated by elegant black window casements with matching black louvres filtering the last of the evening light into the intimate space. Baretta holds an impressive range of local and global wines and champagnes to celebrate all occasions in lavish style, but also offers an equally interesting array of non-alcoholic often a restaurant and bar offers refreshments. I am pleasantly surprised by this unexpected delight. Baretta’s homemade range of sodas includes summery infusions of lavender, rhubarb and honey, and tangy strawberry and balsamic vinegar. Our charming and knowledgeable waiter informs us the three-day
process is one that has been used to create unique cocktails or ‘shrubs’ since the 1700s. Such attention to detail is evident across the board, from the flawless service to the creation of each morsel that graces the table. Taste buds tantalised by the moreish piattini (sharing plates) that include steamed mussels, crispy squid, arancini, pumpkin, leek, hazelnut and goat cheese gnocchi, and veal meatballs, I mentally file those away for another night out with friends, and move on to the main dishes. It’s a tough choice, but we are very pleased indeed with the glazed pork belly, which is accompanied by braised cabbage, succulent sweet prunes on thyme roast potato with marsala gravy, the chicken cacciatore served with crispy parmesan polenta and braised beans, and a side of garden peas with pancetta and hazelnuts. Finally, the moment I have been longing for all evening arrives: dolce sorpressa – dessert! Italy’s answer to gourmet doughnuts meltin-the-mouth and are perfectly complemented by generous dollops of chocolate mousse, homemade ice cream and white chocolate cream. The perfect end to a delightful evening. Sempre deliziosia!

When Honda first launched its HRV here in 1999, it grew up in the shadow of its stablemate the highly successful CRV. The HRV was accepted willingly by the buying public, and there are still many gracing our roads, but with CRV dominating sales in the crossover SUV market, the HRV was discontinued in 2006. Well, HRV is back, and I think it is established in a position where it is not so vulnerable to CRV. A new market segment has opened up for small to mid-size SUVs, especially those in two-wheeldrive form, and the HRV slots into that area perfectly. Originally designated Hi-rider Revolutionary Vehicle, today’s HRV adopts that principle, it is tall (1.6m), and although it isn’t difficult to access, it does have high ground clearance (170mm). Not that the HRV will be heading off road at all. All variants are front-wheel-drive only. I applaud the concept, not a lot of SUVs travel cross-country anyway,
so to have the simplicity of a well-engineered two-wheel-drive layout makes sense. You can guarantee the HRV has design parameters that not only attract buyers with its flashy and trendy looks, it has a floorplan and interior layout that is both practical and functional. Well, that doesn’t surprise me, it is based on the Jazz platform after all. The HRV gets Honda’s wellpromoted Magic Seat system, it is an easy-to-understand system whereby several seating configurations can be created so that objects or items of unusual sizes can be carried. And while its dimensions are compact, you needn’t think the HRV is short on space – it isn’t. That’s something Honda does well, the interior proportions are designed for comfort and easy access. It is a bit of a squeeze across the rear for three adults, but for those slight of build, or for children, it has seats that contain the body well.
Incidentally, I took my mother for a short ride in the HRV, she’s now into her late 80s and not as agile as she once was, but getting in and out of the car wasn’t problematic. Honda is landing the HRV in six specifications, it lists from $32,900 and ends at $43,900 for the Sport Plus model. I’m due to drive the range-topper soon, but in the interim the entry-level S, which this evaluation focuses on, is a good place to start. I’ve come to the realisation that the base specification cars are more appealing to me than those with all the kit, which I believe is not always necessary. And the S-specced HRV doesn’t miss out on much and there are still all the ingredients to make it comfortable and pleasant to drive. The most notable inclusion is the large central touch-screen display, which needs to be manipulated to control items such as air conditioning, entertainment and communication. It also is the

device for viewing a reversing camera, and satellite navigation, if you wish to upload the software which needs to be incorporated into an Apple iPhone. Under the bonnet sits a 1.8-litre, four-cylinder, single-camshaft engine. It is pretty much the same unit which powers Civic in this country, and drives through a continuously variable automatic transmission. I’ve written many times before of the benefits of CVT, it is light, uncomplicated and doesn’t load the engine which has fuel saving benefits. And with Honda’s manufacturing philosophy of maximising fuel use, the HRV gets pretty spectacular claims. Honda lists a 6.6-litre per 100km (43mpg) combined cycle rating. That sits well with the 8l/100km (35mpg) during evaluation, and a 7l/100km (40mpg) instantaneous readout sitting at a steady 100km/h with the engine turning over relaxed at just 1800rpm. Honda also claims power outputs of 105kW and 172Nm, these are healthy figures and combine to provide solid underfoot acceleration. A standstill to 100km/h time of 9.9sec can be

expected, the engine is happy to lunge freely up the rev band, it works quietly and is responsive to throttle input. I took the test car on the tight and twisty roads of the peninsula and it delighted with its directional ability and overall stability. Bearing in mind the S specification model doesn’t get the low-profile and sticky tyres of its up-spec stablemates, it still handles with dignity, and is certainly controlled in the way it points and steers into a corner. The 215/60 x 16in Bridgestone Turanza tyres provide just enough feedback but, more importantly, they work quietly under pressure and don’t complain on our coarse chip seal. The HRV stands out for its extraordinary design, and while based on an old concept, modern engineering practices make it stand apart from many other vehicles. Yet it won’t have everything its own way, there is fresh product, notably Suzuki Vitara and Ford Ecosport, which will give it a run for its money. But with the wealth of specification options and vast product line-up, the HRV is appealing and will fit any budget.
