NEW YORK, NEW YORK

CRISP COLD COFFEE BREW A new taste of summer is coming to Christchurch thanks to the inventive roasters at Vivace. Combining single origin coffees from Sumatra, Brazil and Kenya, the coffee connoisseurs at Vivace have just released their cold brew coffee. Steeped for around 18 hours, this process extracts the blend's subtle flavours. Served chilled over ice, this refreshing blend sings out with mellow caramel and rich chocolately notes. Pop in to Vivace’s flagship café for your icecold coffee brew on Tuam Street today.

New York Deli has just opened its doors on a third location – now at Bush Inn. Serving its famous freshly baked bagels and wholesome ‘hero’ sandwiches, New York Fries will be a first on the menu. Dine in or takeaway seven days.

PARTY CENTRAL

The re-emergence of the beloved Poplar Lane is finally here. Four bars under the umbrella of Dux Central have brought the restored and re-strengthened former Twisted Hop building to life. Old brickwork reveals a sliver of Christchurch’s history and exposed steel beams point towards a new future. The Brew Bar is dedicated to the beer buff, offering more than 200 global craft beers. Punters can relax indoors or soak up the sun in the courtyard or up on the roof. Retire in style and up the ante with sophisticated drinks in the Emerald Room or retire next door to The Poplar Social Club, a refined cocktail lounge for something a little more intimate.

It’s all happening on the junction of Manchester and St Asaph streets. Not only has True Grit hair salon returned to its roots on Manchester street (see more on their glamorous new salon on page 45), but a sizzling new restaurant, bar, and lounge, Mish Mash, and its sister espresso bar and cafe, Tap N Grind, have both opened next door. Infused with a healthy dose of edgy street kudos, Mish Mash is just that: a mash up of ingredients – for both your taste buds and your eyeballs. Urban grit and vibrant ethnic charm champion with street art murals featuring native New Zealand birds to form the backdrop for the rustic bar and dining booths. Sample one of their delectable cocktails using the freshest seasonal produce and graze on their tasty edible offerings like the Bourbon Pork Chop served with cornbread and hazelnuts or the Cured Salmon Congee. Begin and end your night at Mish Mash and chill out to the funky lounge music with DJs rocking the house on Friday and Saturday nights.

Early evening in the city and the spring wind kicked up mini dust devils which swirled along the street, chasing the citizens heading to Ballantynes. The red carpet formed a path to refuge from the breeze and in the Contemporary Lounge, the inviting clink of glasses rang in welcome. Relaxing with small talk and richly laden platters, guests readied themselves to flirt with fashions fit for summer. A shiver of excitement wove through the darkened hush, the lights dimmed except on the runway as the show commenced. The legion of elegant models strode the stage to sway the garments before the audience, whose imaginations came alive with dreams of the coming season of stylish dressing.

Cholmondeley Official Opening The high noon reflected off Lyttelton Harbour throwing light and heat onto the Port Hills where, commanding the view, the newly completed Cholmondeley building stood in welcome. Having sustained irreparable earthquake damage, the original facility was sacrificed to progress and safety of design, to be replaced by this new edifice. Invited guests took to the cool shade with refreshing drinks to stave off the fury of the hot spring sun. Speeches intoned from the hearts of the speakers with sincere affection for this place served as the prelude for the official act of opening. A blessing and dedication topped the ceremony, making Cholmondely ready to serve the needs of future generations of children in this haven of security and love.

Canterbury Fashion Beauty Week Launch Party The Tannery played host to the Canterbury Fashion Beauty Week launch party, heralding a stylish springtime. The popping of corks and some cheeky burlesque dancing, raised not only eyebrows in pleasant surprise but also glasses in a carillon of toasts. In compliment to the evening's fun, long shafts of setting sun shone through the door of Gustav's, igniting the spark which would blaze into a bonfire of fashion though that week.

CFBW Summer Collections and Awards

Paul and Mariessa Waddington

There was a buzz of excited anticipation in the air at The Tannery as night fell and an event not to be missed got underway. The Canterbury Fashion Beauty Week Summer Collections and Awards were gracing the victorian mall which had been table lined and decorated to be an arcade of cabaret and couture. The lights dimmed and as in a dream, lithe dancers milled around as limp puppets, brought to life by the ringmaster, in darkly unsettling steampunk robes. Then came the time for the models to make the long walk to fashion glory, each high-heeled step taking them along the tunnel of admiring gazes as palms met in applause. When the last garment withdrew from the field, the atmosphere did not subside, indeed it was the signal for the after-event party to begin and for the remaining segment of night to rock with the sounds of merriment.

Design & Build Sustainably It needn't cost any more to build an energy-efficient home. All it takes is careful planning and design for greater comfort and future savings on power bills. Always shop around to make sure the people you enlist to build your house have the credentials to give you the highest level of quality sustainable solutions. Working with professional architects, designers and builders who understand energy-efficient design principles will guarantee you use the best methods and materials to get the most from your home. There are numerous ways to cash in on nature's bounty completely free of charge. Harness the sun's warmth and light by positioning your house on the sunniest part of your section and orient it to face north. Position the main living areas, to the north to make the most of the sun's rays and relegate service areas like garages and bathrooms to the southern side of the house. Make sure you bank the sun's heat by installing good insulation

through. Compact square shapes and multi-level homes have less external surface area and are therefore easier and cheaper to keep warm. Considering adequate ventilation in your home's design is the key to keeping your house cool and comfortable throughout the warmer months, and also helps remove moisture and maintain air quality. Ask your architect to design rooms with a layout that enables effective crossventilation to help with this. A handy hint on heating from the energy experts is to live in your new house for a while before installing heating so you can work out how much heating you need. If it's cleverly designed you may be surprised how little heating your new home actually needs. For more information on energy in the home, visit www.energywise.govt.nz.

Websites like Pinterest are fantastic for creating mood boards, while Houzz.com is one of Frobisher's favourite online resources for design inspiration. Your interior is a reflection of you. It's your opportunity to add unique touches that mirror who you are. By injecting your personality into the build you will turn a simple house into a home you will enjoy. Think about your lifestyle and what is important to you and your family in terms of functionality and features. It can be difficult to know where to begin so choose a feature piece of furniture like a bespoke cabinet, mirror, statement light, artwork, rug, wallpaper or curtain fabric. From that initial piece the rest will flow. It’s not about everything matching, but creating interest with contrasts: a leather chair with gold metal legs; a classic raw

linen lounge suite introducing ‘pops’ of colour with cushions – lemongrass is on trend for summer – and the possibilities are endless with literally thousands of fabrics from which to choose. Bring the outdoors in with florals and botanic prints, or make a striking statement with bold geometrics. Monochromatic black and white is a timeless colour combination or add a touch of luxe with metallic prints on fabric, lamps and shades or an accent piece such as the iconic starburst mirror. No matter how big or small your build is, take time to plan, budget and enjoy designing your dream home. Have fun and be bold with your choices.

Building on a Budget Building your own home is one of the biggest investments of a lifetime and with a few clever tips we show you how to make the most of what you can afford.

Deciding exactly what you want and then sticking with it will ensure you stay on budget, on time, and all with minimal stress.

get smart with your money to achieve your dream home without compromising on what’s really important. Consider buying a large plot of land with friends or family which you can split into smaller lots. Many great locations tend to cover more ground, so get the stunning harbour view you dream of by sharing the cost with someone you don’t mind having as a neighbour. opting for low-maintenance building materials, like vinyl siding and metal roofing saves in the long run. although they may be more expensive to install you will save money on future repairs, replacement or repainting. using salvaged and recycled materials and componentry from the abundance of demolition sites around the city not only adds valuable character to new builds, but can save money, too.

For the safety and security of your home, don’t skimp on structural elements, doors and windows. Buy the very best you can afford and, together with your architect or builder, determine other areas you could save on to allow for a few luxuries. it’s important not to waste valuable cash on overbuilding. look carefully at the existing properties in the area and be aware that building a home that is bigger and better than those of your neighbours will not necessarily equate to a fair price if and when it's time to sell. instead, the value of your build will be determined by the lower-priced homes around it. The experience of a wellqualified contractor is an invaluable asset in any building project. not only will you have recourse should anything go wrong, but their experience in

the industry means they will have established relationships with suppliers and subcontractors, whom they trust to deliver the best workmanship possible. Keep a close eye on construction allowances as your home is being built to ensure you are getting what you asked for and what you paid for. if you had initially agreed on using a specific brand, for example, then don’t settle for less, unless you discuss a cost adjustment with your builder or contractor. Many a building project has snowballed out of control in the financial department due to changes being made to the design and materials once building is already underway. deciding exactly what you want and then sticking with it will ensure you stay on budget, within your expected time frame, and all with minimal stress.

From the ground up Solid planning and preparation are vital to the success of any building project. The Certified Builders Association's Canterbury president, pat Coughlan, offers some insider knowledge to simplify the lengthy and complicated process. Before starting any building project, kick start the process by gathering all the necessary material and information you need to decide on styles, materials and services you would like and create a check list of basic requirements. this is one of the fun parts of the process, so enjoy scouring through interior design and architecture magazines, browsing online resources for information on products (www.selector.co.nz is a great online directory for the latest products and building materials) and perusing the abundance of online design blogs to inspire and educate yourself on different styles, applications, layouts and construction methods available. Visit show homes and expos for ideas, watch lifestyle and building programmes like Grand Designs to explore creative solutions other

people are using and familiarise yourself with average costings of building supplies. Knowing how much you can afford will dictate any decisions you can make on products and services, so work this out at the beginning of the planning process to avoid costly mistakes and to manage your expectations from the outset. There are many financing options available, so make an appointment with your bank or mortgage broker who will give you a realistic idea of what you can afford. It pays to shop around because interest rates can vary greatly. It's imperative to read the fine print and obtain expert legal advice before signing any finance deals. once you know how much money you have to work with, ensure you prioritise your wants Quality custom-made, bespoke furniture and joinery

versus needs. For more on getting the most bang for your buck, turn to page 20. Selecting a builder early on in the process is advised. It is one of the most important decisions you will make. If you're using an architect, they can manage the process for you, but ultimately who you employ to do the work is your decision. Get advice from a Certified Builder when making critical decisions like choosing a section, architectural style, plans and building materials, it will save you headaches down the track. Before making any decisions, make sure you do your research. Ask around friends, family and colleagues who have been through the process themselves, listen to what prospective builders have to say about how they work, and lastly, listen to your gut.

remember the cheapest is not always your best bet, and trust between you and your builder is vital when your greatest lifetime investment is at stake. Keep your options open and approach a few builders, even if you have a preferred builder in mind. When getting quotes from each builder, let them know this is what you're doing. this transparent approach will make for honest, open communication, which is an essential ingredient for a successful working relationship with your chosen builder and will also help keep prices competitive. Once your finances are in order, plans drawn up and your builder on board, the next step is the contract. Know what options are available to you and what you are signing. A full contract is the most common form of contract. A full contract means the builder is responsible for the whole project from start to finish, and is recommended for most situations. A labour-only contract gives you complete control over the whole project, including the paperwork, subcontractors, materials and the builder. Unless you are familiar

with the building industry and are prepared to make the building project your full-time job, it pays to think twice about taking on this responsibility. A managed labour contract is where the builder manages the day-to-day running of the project, but you are responsible for purchasing the materials and choosing subcontractors and so forth. With this option, both parties must be clear on their roles and responsibilities. take the time to read the contract carefully and ask for independent advice on any aspect you don't thoroughly understand. manage your expectations with regular communication between yourself and other parties, and be accepting of delays due to things outside your control, like weather and waiting on various suppliers that can affect timelines. more often than not, owners will want to make various changes to the original plans during the building process, so make sure you discuss any changes you'd like with your builder to ascertain if they are in fact possible and how it will affect your budget.

Love YOur SheD If not knowing where to find what you need amidst the jumble of extension cables, gardening tools, sporting equipment and junk in your shed is driving you crazy, we have a few solutions that will create calm from the chaos. Sheds and garages are one part of our homes we tend to forget about. Before we know it, they become a red-zoned area that we avoid like the plague, until summer arrives and we find ourselves spending longer than we’d like looking for gardening tools, the picnic basket or pool supplies. Get a head start on summer and set one day aside at the weekend to get your garage or gardening shed organised. Choose a fine day and begin by removing everything from your garage. As you take things out you will begin to unearth all those long forgotten items and begin to sort them into separate piles. Grouping like with like, decide what you want to keep, what should be thrown away and what needs to be repaired or replaced. Take stock of leftover materials from past home

2010 Aston Martin Rapide V12 NZ New only 9,000kms, 470 HP 6.0 V12, Heated/Cooled/ Electric Ivory Leather Front and Rear Seats, Rear seat entertainment with Wireless headphones and Dual Screens, Paddleshift, Daytime Running Lights, Radar detector, NZ Nav and Bluetooth. A stunning looking motor car!

DIY projects and sell or donate anything to charity that you are not likely to use again. Once you’ve completed sorting everything into manageable piles give the inside of the garage a good sweep and clean out all the drawers, sorting things as you did before, into separate piles. Now you can see all that you have laid neatly on the driveway or lawn, it’s time to ascertain the most suitable way to store the contents. Domestic goddess Martha Stewart’s hot tip for keeping garages clutter free is utilising valuable wall space by installing a wall-mounted track system. Choose a horizontal channel that screws to the wall and is fitted with accessories like hooks and shelves to hang and store tools. A cheap alternative for wall-hung

storage for the DIY enthusiast is a simple pegboard from which you can hang hooks and wire baskets. Make the most of the space above your car by installing ceiling racks to hold sports equipment, outdoor furniture, and other seasonal items like outdoor Christmas decorations you only use once or twice a year. This frees up more room to keep the items you use on a regular basis close at hand. If you don’t have the luxury of a permanent bench space, consider installing a table that can be hung on the wall when not in use and folded down when needed.

This is a great space-saving solution and will give you enough space for repotting plants and making repairs. Bins and storage containers are most convenient when they can be stacked and put together in one area. Label drawers or storage containers with their contents to make locating items easy.

Communication & CONNECTION

LYNETTE MCFADDEN

BUSINESS OWNER, HARCOURTS GOLD AND WELL KNOWN BUSINESSWOMAN

I think of these two elements as being universally linked; in fact a brief literature search revealed’ huge numbers of articles and references relating to both, and their deep correlation. Accordingly, I believe the world looks kindly on those that communicate in an empathetic and articulate manner, and strong communication skills are often one of the foundations of success, both in my own industry and others. But the communication methods of my belief systems and the world we all live in yield some entirely different scenarios. Before we interpret business communication methods I’m going to enter (briefly) the scary territory of family communication. I love nothing more than healthy dynamic conversations with our two sons and their friends but first we have to get past some

actions that other parents might recognise. Eyes downcast, often completely and utterly obsessed with whatever game, text or Facebook message is lobbying for attention. Preoccupation with social media drives the sort of attention that excludes everything else! It can be, and often is, a massive block to communication. I’ve read that constant engagement with your phone has had an alarming impact on attention spans which I’m noticing more and more in both a domestic and professional context.

If I then move to real estate I find constant emailing versus a physical phone call has introduced an arm’s length barrier that can make rapport difficult and message or meaning can be clouded. Much of the rationale for that is convenience and timeliness, all great, but I consider the absence of any verbal conversation a loss. The feedback I get from clients is that one of the priorities is constant feedback across all mediums.

Recent research has identified the average person checks their phone at least 50 times a day and these types of behaviours can be seen in many professional settings.

So what’s my point? It’s hard to connect if you don’t communicate, look up from your phone and deal with the person actually in front of you.

A friend recently tried to purchase an item of clothing at a local store only to wait for a lengthy period for the shop assistant to stop taking her own ‘selfies’. Service certainly wasn’t high on the list there.

You never know where it could lead.

bach style files

Whether you’re planning on a building your holiday home from the ground up, renovating an old bach or simply adding some nautical-inspired décor accents to your urban pad for the summer, natural materials play a big part in determining style and character. Nestled in lush native bush or blessed with beach vistas, you’ll want to ensure you get the most from what Mother Nature has to offer. Consider the best outlook for natural light when positioning windows and balconies. Picture windows can be floor to ceiling or just a sliver of glass offering a tantalising glimpse of what lies beyond. Windows are a great way to add interest and light to stairwells, or position them at eye level to catch restful views whilst luxuriating in the bath, dining or preparing food in the kitchen, optimising your connection to the outdoors. Think about utilising natural materials like timber, which can be used in various ways to create a rustic look, or something with an utterly contemporary edge. Brighten up dark wood-panelled interiors by whitewashing walls, beams and floors, and introduce splashes of colour with

artwork, textiles and plants. Hard-working areas like kitchens and bathrooms benefit from equally hardwearing materials like engineered stone, concrete and stainless steel. A balance between old and new will lend character to new builds and complement rustic bach renovations. Popular sixties and seventies style weatherboard bachs can get away with a more ‘lived-in’ feel and you can pick up second-hand furniture for next to nothing that looks made for the environment. Remember that a holiday home ought to be relaxed and informal, so don’t be too concerned that everything matches or is in pristine condition. Peruse op shops and markets wherever you go and keep an eye out for that special curiosity that will add instant personality and history to your holiday home.

Consider cooking outdoors on the grill or using the microwave instead of the oven or stove on hot days. Keep temperatures under control by always using the stove’s spot ventilation above the range hood to transfer heat outside and avoid using the dishwasher during the heat of the day. The bathroom and laundry are other areas around the home where appliances create unwanted heat on warm days. When you shower or run a bath use the bathroom fan to suck out heat and

moisture. Washing machines also generate a lot of heat, so opt for cold washes on hotter days and take advantage of the fine weather to dry your washing outside instead of using the dryer. Electronic devices, such as entertainment systems and computers, produce heat too, as do burning candles and other appliances like curling irons and hair dryers, so make sure they are not kept on unnecessarily or at least have plenty of ventilation to circulate around them. If you are considering redesigning your garden and outdoor areas, discuss with your landscape architect the ways protective shade can be incorporated to help cool your home. When the opportunity arises to replace your roof or if you are building a new home, opt for a light-coloured material that will reflect, rather than absorb the heat, and insulate your home adequately to help keep the heat out in summer and retain it in the winter.

lavender gift bags

With lavender coming into full bloom from spring through summer, get creative and make up a few fragrant lavender bags as little thank-you treats for festive dinner party hostesses and Christmas stocking stuffers.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED • Natural cotton fabric • Coloured ribbon or rustic string • Sewing thread • Dried lavender • Teaspoon or funnel • Craft fabric ink • Decorative stamp • Sewing machine 1 Measure out your fabric, taking into account an extra 15mm on each side for seams and cut fabric into long, rectangular strips that will double over to create a pouch and iron flat. The narrow width that is folded over will form the bottom of the bag. 2 Sew straight lines up each side 15mm from the edge. 3 If you prefer the simplest approach and a more rustic look

then you can leave the raw edge at the opening, otherwise fold the top over to form a hem and machine sew. 4 Add any decoration to the fabric before sewing. Using fabric craft ink from your local craft store and stamps is one of the simplest ways to adorn your bags. 5 Fill the sachet with the lavender buds using a funnel or a teaspoon and secure with a ribbon or length of rustic string.

PERENNIAL NEW WAVE With talk of tropical El Nino weather patterns continuing to affect New Zealand’s climate this summer, local landscape architect, Craig Wilson, provides some great planting advice to create dynamic and sustainable gardens. Facing drier weather conditions in the eastern parts of New Zealand combined with increased water restrictions in Canterbury it’s a good time to consider how this impacts on our gardens, and particularly on plant selection. For some years now an emerging trend in garden design has seen more drought-tolerant plantings. Previously we may have considered this something only our Australian counterparts had to deal with, but as water and irrigation issues have become more prevalent across the Tasman, investigation into the use of drought-tolerant plants in New Zealand has increased. The first response to water supply and availability

restrictions is to choose plants that are matched to the local environmental conditions. Plants that are native to an area are more likely to thrive, whereas introduced botanical specimens may require additional irrigation and specific nutrient input levels that are both costly and unsustainable. Drought-tolerant plants are often characterised by a silver/ green foliage colour, such as New Zealand natives Brachyglottis, Pachystegia, and Olearia that are well suited to dry Canterbury conditions. Most of our native grasses are equally as proficient at surviving prolonged dry spells, once established. If you wanted something more

exotic, then there are plenty of other drought-tolerant plant options to explore. Plants suited to a Mediterranean climate will generally thrive in Canterbury. Try santolina, olive, sweet bay, rosemary and lavender to add good evergreen structure and some flowering interest. For textural interest, Australian native evergreens Lomandra and Dianella, recently available in New Zealand, have a wide range of hybrids, which are much like our own native grasses, but have a wider range of colours and have the propensity to hold a better, rigid, upright form over time. When planted en masse with closer spacing these will achieve a ground-cover effect, which may

also help with reduced on going maintenance and weed control. On a recent garden tour of Northern California, it was interesting to note the plant selection implemented at the McConnell Arboretum in Turtle Bay, which was reminiscent of the ‘New Perennial’ garden movement championed by famous garden designers like Piet Oudolf. Drought-tolerant flowering perennials like Russian sage, Verbena bonariensis and echinacea were used for pops of pink and purple amidst textural Californian grasses and succulents. This is a visually appealing and sustainable design that could be successfully applied to Canterbury gardens.

Rotary Children's Charity Ball

Amy Walsh, Andrew Currie

Times when travel was a special occasion and dreams of faraway places tingled the appetite for the exotic, were recalled at the Air force Museum when the 19th Children's Charity Ball staged by Rotary took place. Themed as Come Fly With Me, the evening was a showcase of fine dressing and fundraising for a good cause, this year's benefitting charity being St John. Then came time when formalities ceased, for heels to be kicked up and the richness of dinner worked off upon the dance floor.

Cup Day Glamour Trelise Cooper offers her personal advice for creating a sensational look for Canterbury's finest fashion hour. Canterbury Cup Week falls at a time of year when Trelise Cooper is traditionally overseas, but the former member of Flemington Races, and judge of a few of the auckland race day fashion events knows what it takes to create a showstopping raceday look. Signature elements for which this Kiwi designer is renowned: bright pops of colour, intricate patterns and textural embellishments, are also the hallmarks of any race-day head-turning outfit. “I don’t believe Cup Week is a black day,” Trelise tells

Look to a small section of your dress’s pattern or a background colour to determine what fashion accessories you choose for those critical finishing touches.

Social ClImBEr

Millie Clarke provides transitional fashion options for the social season. Summer has our social calendars filled with events, most of which require us to look our sharpest, no matter how warm the weather. Between afterwork drinks, weekend barbecues and Cup and Show Week, the need to change out of your summer shorts and into your summer suit will arise. Styling has evolved, making it perfectly acceptable to blur the lines between formal and casual

wear when it comes to suits. Take a relaxed short-sleeved shirt, button to the top and pair it up with a straight to slim trouser. Slightly roll up the leg bottoms to create an instant tapering at the ankle that won't affect the roomier fit. Add a dress shoe or loafer that has a lighter tone for summer – stick to light greys and tan – easing the transition from day to evening.

Go a little European and lose your socks and show off your mankles. Boots aside, most shoes work for this look. However, boys, I advise you to invest in a good shoe deodoriser if you are going to commit to this summer trend. Warm seasons are the perfect time to experiment with trends. Be open to new styles, but never dress like someone you're not.

Working with clients to plan their travel adventures since 1999. I have zip-lined in Chiang Mai, walked the uneven steps of the Great Wall in China, snorkelled the Great Barrier Reef and explored the Temples and Pagodas of Myanmar, Ruins of Machu Picchu and Stonehenge. I have helicoptered over the Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon, hung out with Monkeys in Gibraltar, Manta. rays in Moorea and Llamas in Peru. Whatever your next holiday is, I’d love to help you get there.

Holidays are exciting! I love Asia with its diverse culture, gorgeous beaches and amazing food. Be it cruising on Halong Bay, visiting the quaint ancient town of Ho Ani, relaxing on a gorgeous beach in Koh Samui or shopping and enjoy the delicious food in Bangkok, I know you will want to go back time and time again. I love to build unforgettable holiday experiences, I am just back from Hawaii, the perfect spot for relaxing and action. I love Travel! All things from adventure to flop and drop beach holidays. Family holidays are a specialty of mine, cruising in Croatia, tricky and intricate itineraries, I do the lot. Having based myself in the UK for four years, I covered a huge amount of Europe, 6 months through Africa and 4 months through Central and South America. More recent trips have been about having some beach breaks with my family to Thailand, Bali and Hawaii. I’d love to share my knowledge with you.

The relationship I have with my customers is truly unique. They totally trust me in finding the best holiday experience for them, even if it means changing the destinations. The good old saying ‘you don’t know what you don’t know’. I believe with my extensive travel knowledge, fun loving and caring nature, people trust me to make their dream holiday a reality. homeComing Returning to its roots, True Grit is finally back in its pre-quake home with a stunning new building and fitout that encapsulates all that makes this salon truly fabulous. After the February quakes, True Grit was forced to relocate to a “shoebox”-sized premises on Tuam Street where the team could not always work together. Finally, four years later, the team are back together in a slick new building complete with a brand new look. True Grit owner and senior stylist, Jacqui Victor envisioned a beautiful spacious environment in which clients could luxuriate and retreat from the world beyond. The result is something that has surpassed her wildest expectations. “It’s so much more than I could have dreamed of. I’m very proud of what we’ve achieved and it’s been incredible to see how it’s all come together!” The salon is divided into three distinct areas; The Cutting Floor,

The Spa, and The Colour Retreat. Expect to see an eclectic and vibrant mash-up of New York underground industrial vibe with old-world glamour. Steel rubs shoulders with high-gloss blacklacquered style stations, green living walls and pressed tin tiles. Just in time for Cup fever and the festive season, True Grit introduces Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics and a brand new service with their Party Hair menu. Ditch your daily look and take your pick from one of eight hot styles, from Lady Lyttelton, to Brougham Street Braid and the Moorhouse Mod. To coincide with their cuttingedge fit out, the salon has also given their branding a makeover to reflect their new-found vigor. Check out their new look at www.truegrit.co.nz.

Refreshing, hydrating and soothing, the new skincare range will give the man in your life a greater sense of well-being and vitality to face the day. 3 Months out

Visit a beauty therapy salon for a skin analysis. Your skin therapist will be able to recommend the most suitable product for your skin type to use at home. Bear in mind the 70% of the results you see on the skin are effects of a good home-care routine. this is the ideal time to discuss which in-salon treatment would be most beneficial before your event. Increase your water intake and make appropriate changes to your diet to ensure your skin will glow naturally on the day.

2 Months out

this is the time to road-test some treatments to determine which suit your skin best. Start with facials. exfoliation treatments are best undertaken a couple of months before any big event to allow the skin to purge if it needs to, and gentle, hydrating treatments are better scheduled

closer to the time. Ginnie's favourite skin-hydrating treatment is a Vitamin c infusion using Sonophoresis, which is best done a few days before an event to promote radiant skin and a flawless base for makeup application. if you are going to be tanning, opt for a green-based colour that will develop into to a natural glow as opposed to that dreaded ugly orange hue.

1 Month out

resist trying new products in the last four weeks as sometimes skin may go through a transitional phase, which may result in breakouts. Preparing for a special event gives you the perfect opportunity to experiment with different looks, so have fun and try something new. Decide on what specific makeup look you want to create yourself ahead of time or book in a trial with the makeup artist you will use on the day.

1 week out

tan. Spray tanning is best done one to two days before the event. Keep your body well moisturised with a rich body butter or oil for an even tan. If you have experienced a facial before, this also is best scheduled for the beginning of the final week. It's a lovely treat, especially if you are under stress. hydration is important for great looking skin, so make sure you drink two litres of water a day and moisturise day and night. eat a balanced diet and avoid salty foods and alcohol, which can make your body retain water and lead to puffiness. Getting a good night's sleep will keep a lid on stress levels so you relax and enjoy the big day and will also help minimise any breakouts and reduce redness.

In the weeks and months leading up Christmas, big events like Cup & Show Week beyond, Style caught up with the head of Estée Lauder to discover a few tricks of the trade to incorporate into your beauty regime this party season.

Tools of The

Trade General Manager of estée lauder Companies, Marie-ann Billens, has assimilated an arsenal of tried and tested beauty tips over the last 25 years, direct from the makeup experts who work on a daily basis with the respected cosmetics brands she loves and lives by. “If there’s one tip that I can give you, it’s to invest in a foundation brush," says Marie-ann. "It makes your foundation go on far smoother and more evenly, and you use less of it so you don’t go through the bottle anywhere near as fast.” MaC's senior makeup artist at Ballantynes agrees that if there is just one brush to buy it would have to be the foundation brush. “If you begin with a fresh, flawless base then everything looks great, but if your foundation doesn’t look good, nothing will work," says Bryan.

“If you don’t have a long-wear foundation then a concealer and a corrector are critical," Marie-ann insists. “I always carry a concealer, which I use for touch-ups during the day, and it's much more convenient than lugging around a bottle of foundation." another great tip for long lasting luscious lips is to use foundation or concealer over lips to create a blank canvas on which to apply lip pencil followed by lipstick. Blot with a tissue and then apply a second layer of lippie for ultimate staying power. spring is all about fresh, dewy skin, so give nature a little helping hand by utilising highlighters and illuminators. Use highlighters on cheek and brow bones, and mix illuminators with moisturisers and foundation to give a brighter complexion.

YoUr lIfe Dr Libby’s new book, Exhausted to Energized, gives you the tools to restore your energy levels in order to achieve your goals and live life to the fullest. something you weren’t expecting happens: you lose your job, a relationship ends, someone you love passes away. adrenalin kicks in. You feel like you are in shock. You feel like you get more done - because you have to - and you sleep less. But you’re not noticeably tired. If you stopped you would be; in fact, you worry that if you stopped you might never get up. But you can’t stop, so you don’t. You might lose weight without trying. You feel heavy in your body, perhaps lethargic. You may gain weight. It doesn’t matter how little you eat or how often you exercise, nothing changes. With the on going stress you tend to drink alcohol each evening to avoid feeling the emotional pain, and so you wake up tired and start every day with coffee to get yourself going. This adds to the stress inside

your body, takes away from the efficient production of energy, and over the long term can disrupt sex hormone balance, lead to fat accumulation in the liver, with energy declining and body fat increasing. No diet will resolve this. resolving the emotional pain will. resolving why you have stopped seeing and treating yourself as the precious human you are, will. This typical stress pattern we experience in adulthood, dr libby says, must be followed by a period of rest in a restorative and revitalising way. rest must follow action for us to enjoy optimal health, great energy, excellent fat burning, the ability to remain calm, and adequate nourishment for our skin, hair, and nails. one key way of the restoring calm and breaking the stress cycle is learning the importance of diaphragmatic

breathing, which remains the cornerstone of dr libby’s adrenal support solutions and one practice she enthusiastically encourages us to incorporate into our daily lives. how you breathe drives powerful shifts in your nervous system and biochemistry. If you breathe in a shallow way, with short, sharp inhalations and exhalations, then you are communicating to your body that your life is in danger. how you breathe can also be a fast-track to the symptoms of anxiety, and potentially panic attacks. Whether it was an event, a deadline, too much caffeine, the perception of pressure, or the lifetime habit of your nervous system, the result is the same. Nothing communicates to every cell in your body that you are safe than diaphragmatic breathing and no practice down-

regulates the production of alarm signals within your body more powerfully or restores your energy and vitality than long, slow breaths that engage your diaphragm. Be kind and patient with yourself, as this takes practice. In time and with practice the parts that have become disconnected will be thrilled to be back in touch.

RESCUE MISSION Last year, the Westpac Air Rescue team completed 837 missions throughout Canterbury and the West Coast; that's two to three missions every 24 hours. Prepared for every eventuality through rigorous specialist training, the men and women on the front line have stamina of body, heart and mind to save the lives of those in need. Through the eyes of the Crew Chief, Rick Knight, Style Editor Majka Kaiser discovers what it takes to be a real life hero.

My day begins at 5am when I get up and take the dog for a walk and make my daughter's school lunch before heading to the gym by 6:30am and then to the base, where we start our day shift at 7:30am. Once a complete helicopter and gear check is done, we assist the pilots in preparing the other choppers for commercial work for the day. Each and every day can vary remarkably, from being out all day on missions to being relatively quiet back at the base and then suddenly called out towards the end of the shift. Depending on our workload, preparation is made for presentations, as the Air Rescue Trust have pre-arranged groups attending our base where the Trust explains their role and we explain ours and the service we provide within the Canterbury region. If training is required then that has to be arranged with the full complement of the crew to maintain currencies. The days at the base seem to go remarkably fast, with a lot of other general base duties to be done. We end our day shift at 5.30pm but are on call for night missions 24/7. It's a demanding job, technically, physically, mentally,

During each shift, every crew member undertakes in-house training on our winch simulator to ensure that all winching procedures are accomplished correctly using correct procedures. Every 120 days, all winch operators must conduct all aspects of the required winch training competencies, and every two years we undertake snow/bush survival training to keep us sharp. All crew members must have extensive experience as Intensive Care Paramedics before they can apply to become a rescue worker. Following that, they then have to pass a comprehensive physical fitness test, which includes a swimming component. If they pass this, then the interview process begins to see what attributes they could bring to the team and we see if their personality will suit the challenging work environment. It's not for everyone, but for those who have the passion to save lives, the right kind of temperament and a fierce commitment to the job, then it's an incredibly fulfilling way to spend your working days.

HELP SAvE LIvES

Star Media has recently become part of the Air Rescue Support Crew and encourages local businesses, individuals and families to do the same. To find out what goes on behind the scenes and how donations are used, Style caught up with Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue Trust CEO Christine Prince. Whenever the iconic red and yellow helicopter flies overhead two things are certain: one, something very serious has happened, and two, the best help is on its way. The Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue Trust (CWCART) has completed more than 8350 missions since 1989, however, this operation could not continue without the support of donations and grants, and people like you. Christine Prince joined CWCART this year as CEO, and is heavily involved in bringing in the necessary funding. “We need help to keep running this critical service, which is a free service; it is important we can

sustain this as the demands on the service increase... This year our target is to fundraise $7million,” she explains. This total enables the service to confidently protect more than 500,000 people, allows for new medical equipment and more training, and enables each mission to be equipped with what is necessary to make a difference. “Getting help to a patient within 60 minutes of an accident or incident can increase the chances of recovery by up to 80 per cent,” Christine says. The charitable organisation receives 30 per cent of its funding from ACC and the Ministry of Health, and the rest comes from the community.

The latest sponsorship initiative enables individuals, families and businesses to join the Air Rescue Support Crew, which benefits the supporter and the service. The inaugural member is teenager Dylan Flatman, who called on the Westpac Rescue Helicopter when he was 12. On Canterbury Show Day, Dylan collided with a power pole while riding his dirt bike and was airlifted to Christchurch Hospital. “We met with his family recently and he has just started playing rugby again,” Christine says. Despite perception that the Air Rescue service is used predominantly by those involved in extreme outdoor persuits, it doesn’t stop there. Any accident

for which timing or access is crucial will call on air rescue, be it the result of a motor vehicle accident, farming misadventure, medical emergency, or fishing incident. As Christine rightly states, “Essentially, anyone could need the service.” “Last year, the crew completed 837 missions; on average two or three per 24-hour period... As part of the role the crews are also involved in body recoveries – when a mission switches from rescue to recovery.” In times of trouble, only the best will do. Join Star Media and become part of the Air Rescue Support Crew – help them, help you. www.airrescue.co.nz

Spring fashion blossomed into life at Merivale Mall as garments of desire were paraded at sunset. The white marquee was alive with an electrified thrill as guests waited for the show to commence. To a burst of music, the first model appeared followed by a steady line of high strutters who, with feline grace, made the runway their own, holding an almost mesmerising sway over the audience. Hardly sedate, the crowd performed lively bidding during the auction and concluded the evening with enthusiastic applause. The post-show shopping provided a time to reflect on the good done by all present in raising money for the benefitting charity, KidsCan whose ongoing work provides footwear, food and healthcare to disadvantaged children.

InstructIons 1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/400°F. 2. Place macadamia nuts on a baking tray in a hot oven and toast until slightly browned and fragrant. This won’t take long, so keep an eye on them. Remove the nuts and allow to cool before roughly crushing them. 3. Lower the temperature of the oven to 120°C/250°F. Line two baking trays with paper and draw circles on it, depending on what size you want the meringues. 4. Place the egg whites into a clean dry bowl and whisk with electric beaters until soft peaks form. gradually add the sugar to the egg whites, a small amount at a time. 5. Continue beating until all the sugar has been combined. Beat in the vinegar. Add in the cornflour and vanilla and beat until stiff peaks form and the mixture is glossy. 6. Spoon into a piping bag and pipe into the circles you’ve drawn

on the prepared trays. Bake in the oven for 20-30 minutes, until a slight colour appears. 7. Turn off the oven, leave the oven door ajar and leave meringues in there until completely cool. 8. To make candied macadamia nuts you will need bamboo skewers, a piece of polystyrene and one sheet of newspaper. Set up your polystyrene with the newspaper spread out underneath – you want to be able to stick the dipped nut/skewer into it and allow the candy to drip off. Skewer each nut, ready for dipping. 9. Add the sugar and water in a saucepan over a high heat. Wipe the sides of the saucepan with a wet brush, preventing the syrup from crystallising on the sides. Dip macadamias in mixture and leave to set. 10. To make the passionfruit curd, put the pulps of ten passionfruit into a processor and blitz until the seeds are loose. Strain the mixture and reserve the liquid and the pulp. 11. Beat the eggs, yolks and sugar together until thick and pale. 12. Melt the butter over a low heat and, once melted, gradually stir in the egg mixture then the passionfruit juice. Continue to cook on low heat, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens. 13. Off the heat, stir through the pulp and remaining passionfruit, place in a jar and place in the fridge. 14. To make the coconut cream, place the coconut milk can into the fridge overnight, this will allow it to separate. 15. Once cold, flip the can over and pour out the clear liquid. Scoop the solid white cream into a bowl. Add the icing sugar and whip until soft peaks form. 16. Add the vanilla seeds and stir through. Place the cream into the fridge to firm back up. 17. To plate up, put a dollop of coconut cream on each meringue, drizzle with passionfruit curd, top with macadamia nuts and garnish.

Formerly known as Pierce’s Bakery, Delwyn Denton-Lanauze injected her own unique flavour when she took over six months ago, turning the bakery into Mrs Dentons, a café-style delicatessen. With a background in farming and many years spent in the Chatham islands where Delwyn says creative cooking skills were a necessity, Delwyn has enjoyed working with food most of her life. She creates seasonal chutneys, pesto and relishes for customers to savour at home, and has produced a tasty new range for Christmas. A tangy cranberry ketchup makes for a delicious accompaniment to homemade burgers and barbecued meats, and a rich mixed-fruit chutney with dried mango, dates, cranberry and apricots, is an ideal addition to picnic hampers and antipasto platters. With the arrival of summer you can expect to see fresh green and berry smoothies on the menu as well as Delwyn’s scrumptious berry cheesecake jars and luscious

chocolate mousse. Famous for its homemade pies, Mrs Dentons continues to offer Pierce’s popular pie range alongside Lieber Pies made in Fairlie by Austrian chef, Franz Lieber. All six hearty varieties of Lieber pies are hand-filled, completely free of any nasty additives or preservatives, and, in Christchurch, can only be found at Mrs Dentons. On top of delicious pie fillings like salmon and bacon and pork belly with crackle, Delwyn often produces her own creative concoctions that include the unique kangaroo, cheese and blueberry pies. “i often bring back kangaroo from my regular visits to Australia, which i just love. We also make 'boil up' pies with mutton, potato and watercress, which are a big hit with customers.” Also a talented artist, Delwyn will have a new range of her vibrant mixed media artworks on show in store this month, alongside works by Tara Miller.

I am pleasantly surprised by this unexpected delight. Baretta’s homemade range of sodas includes summery infusions of lavender, rhubarb and honey, and tangy strawberry and balsamic vinegar. Our charming and knowledgeable waiter informs us the three-day

process is one that has been used to create unique cocktails or ‘shrubs’ since the 1700s. Such attention to detail is evident across the board, from the flawless service to the creation of each morsel that graces the table. Taste buds tantalised by the moreish piattini (sharing plates) that include steamed mussels, crispy squid, arancini, pumpkin, leek, hazelnut and goat cheese gnocchi, and veal meatballs, I mentally file those away for another night out with friends, and move on to the main dishes. It’s a tough choice, but we are very pleased indeed with the glazed pork belly, which is accompanied by braised cabbage, succulent sweet prunes on thyme roast potato with marsala gravy, the chicken cacciatore served with crispy parmesan polenta and braised beans, and a side of garden peas with pancetta and hazelnuts. Finally, the moment I have been longing for all evening arrives: dolce sorpressa – dessert! Italy’s answer to gourmet doughnuts meltin-the-mouth and are perfectly complemented by generous dollops of chocolate mousse, homemade ice cream and white chocolate cream. The perfect end to a delightful evening. Sempre deliziosia!

The height of spring is the perfect time to chase away the dowdiness of winter with the glamour of a sparkling evening out. HigH-riding Honda

Ross Kiddie Motoring Editor

ross Kiddie checks out Honda's new crossover SUV

When Honda first launched its HRV here in 1999, it grew up in the shadow of its stablemate the highly successful CRV. The HRV was accepted willingly by the buying public, and there are still many gracing our roads, but with CRV dominating sales in the crossover SUV market, the HRV was discontinued in 2006. Well, HRV is back, and I think it is established in a position where it is not so vulnerable to CRV. A new market segment has opened up for small to mid-size SUVs, especially those in two-wheeldrive form, and the HRV slots into that area perfectly. Originally designated Hi-rider Revolutionary Vehicle, today’s HRV adopts that principle, it is tall (1.6m), and although it isn’t difficult to access, it does have high ground clearance (170mm). Not that the HRV will be heading off road at all. All variants are front-wheel-drive only. I applaud the concept, not a lot of SUVs travel cross-country anyway,

so to have the simplicity of a well-engineered two-wheel-drive layout makes sense. You can guarantee the HRV has design parameters that not only attract buyers with its flashy and trendy looks, it has a floorplan and interior layout that is both practical and functional. Well, that doesn’t surprise me, it is based on the Jazz platform after all. The HRV gets Honda’s wellpromoted Magic Seat system, it is an easy-to-understand system whereby several seating configurations can be created so that objects or items of unusual sizes can be carried. And while its dimensions are compact, you needn’t think the HRV is short on space – it isn’t. That’s something Honda does well, the interior proportions are designed for comfort and easy access. It is a bit of a squeeze across the rear for three adults, but for those slight of build, or for children, it has seats that contain the body well.

Incidentally, I took my mother for a short ride in the HRV, she’s now into her late 80s and not as agile as she once was, but getting in and out of the car wasn’t problematic. Honda is landing the HRV in six specifications, it lists from $32,900 and ends at $43,900 for the Sport Plus model. I’m due to drive the range-topper soon, but in the interim the entry-level S, which this evaluation focuses on, is a good place to start. I’ve come to the realisation that the base specification cars are more appealing to me than those with all the kit, which I believe is not always necessary. And the S-specced HRV doesn’t miss out on much and there are still all the ingredients to make it comfortable and pleasant to drive. The most notable inclusion is the large central touch-screen display, which needs to be manipulated to control items such as air conditioning, entertainment and communication. It also is the

device for viewing a reversing camera, and satellite navigation, if you wish to upload the software which needs to be incorporated into an Apple iPhone. Under the bonnet sits a 1.8-litre, four-cylinder, single-camshaft engine. It is pretty much the same unit which powers Civic in this country, and drives through a continuously variable automatic transmission. I’ve written many times before of the benefits of CVT, it is light, uncomplicated and doesn’t load the engine which has fuel saving benefits. And with Honda’s manufacturing philosophy of maximising fuel use, the HRV gets pretty spectacular claims. Honda lists a 6.6-litre per 100km (43mpg) combined cycle rating. That sits well with the 8l/100km (35mpg) during evaluation, and a 7l/100km (40mpg) instantaneous readout sitting at a steady 100km/h with the engine turning over relaxed at just 1800rpm. Honda also claims power outputs of 105kW and 172Nm, these are healthy figures and combine to provide solid underfoot acceleration. A standstill to 100km/h time of 9.9sec can be

expected, the engine is happy to lunge freely up the rev band, it works quietly and is responsive to throttle input. I took the test car on the tight and twisty roads of the peninsula and it delighted with its directional ability and overall stability. Bearing in mind the S specification model doesn’t get the low-profile and sticky tyres of its up-spec stablemates, it still handles with dignity, and is certainly controlled in the way it points and steers into a corner. The 215/60 x 16in Bridgestone Turanza tyres provide just enough feedback but, more importantly, they work quietly under pressure and don’t complain on our coarse chip seal. The HRV stands out for its extraordinary design, and while based on an old concept, modern engineering practices make it stand apart from many other vehicles. Yet it won’t have everything its own way, there is fresh product, notably Suzuki Vitara and Ford Ecosport, which will give it a run for its money. But with the wealth of specification options and vast product line-up, the HRV is appealing and will fit any budget.

Celebrating art throughout the decades in the city was the reason a company of welldressed folk gathered one cold and wet evening at the Council Chambers. There in the foyer, they met to share drinks and chat before moving upstairs to where dinner awaited. In the city renowned for gardens, many other disciplines of art as well as culture also abound, with the art gallery standing as the palace of all things fine, creative and above the mundane.
